SNA OF SC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
In the House of Delegates' session at the 54th Annual State Conference held on Friday, October 20, 2006, a motion was made to name the SNA of SC's Scholarship Program the DR. VIVIAN PILANT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. The motion passed with an unanimous vote of the House of Delegates.
An unveiling of this announcement by the 2006-07 President Todd Bedenbaugh was made at the General Session Saturday morning, October 21, 2006 and was received by the general membership with much enthusiasm. President Bedenbaugh unveiled and presented Dr. Pilant with a portrait of herself. Dr. Pilant was very surprised and moved by this honor and expressed her appreciation and gratitude to the SNA of SC.
Dr. Pilant passed away on Monday, March 29, 2010. She served as the State Director of the Office of School Food Services and Nutrition for over 25 years. This office oversees the operation of the federally-funded school food services programs in South Carolina.
Dr. Pilant was admired locally and nationally for her perserverance, both professionally and personally, in the face of challenges. She was a pioneer and champion for the child nutrition programs and made many contributions to this cause.

2010-11 Dr. Vivian Pilant Scholarship Program Recipients
We are excited about the eight scholarship applications that were received, reviewed, and awarded for the 2010-11 school year. Congratulations to all of the recipients.
§ Ashley Gardner is the daughter of Sally B. Nicholson, the School Food Service Director for the Pickens County School District. Ashley is a junior at the University of South Carolina with plans to graduate in December 2011 with a Bachelors of Arts in Education. She aspires to become an elementary school teacher. In addition to being a full-time student, Ashley works part-time and is an active volunteer at her church with the youth group and vacatoin Bible school.
§ Sarah Gardner is the daughter of Sally B. Nicholson, the School Food Service Director for the Pickens County School District. Sarah is a freshman at Presbyterian College with aspirations of being in the educational field and making a difference in many, many lives. Sarah graduated with a 4.341 GPA and is esteemed among the best by school administrators.
§ Jason B. Murray is the son of Brenda Dobson, a school food service employee in Sumter School Distirct Two. He is currently attending Feather River College in Quincy, Califorinia. He enjoys working with children and plans to be a teacher.
§ Ashley Nicole Jordan is entering her junior year at the College of Charleston. Ashley is a declared Political Science major with a double minor in Asian Studies and Business Economics. She the Outstanding Student of the Year in Beginning Chinese last spring and has recently been honored as the Outstanding Student of the Year in Intermediate Chinese. Ashley plans to apply to the Maters in International Relations Programs at both John's Hopkins and Columbia University with the hope to improve the state of our nation's integral relastionship with China. Ashley is the daughter of Sandi Jordan, school food service director in Anderson School District Five.
§ Pamela McInnis is entering her senior year at the University of South Carolina - Sumter and is completing her studies to earn a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. She plans to pursue her master's degree after graduation in 2011. Pamela is the daughter of Brenda McInnis who is the cafeteria manager at Crestwood High School in Sumter School District Two.
§ Sierrah Oates, the daughter of Janice Oates who works in the State Office of Health and Nutrition, is in her senior year at Coastal Carolina University and presently enrolled in the Wall College of Business as a Business Management Major. In the past three years, Sierrah has been on the Dean's List, Big South Presient's Honor Roll, NCAA All Academic Team, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sority, Incorporated Academic All Star and Wall College Academic Honors. She also finds time to be active in her Church activities and community volunteer programs. Sierrah aspires to become a corporate lawyer.
§ Brittney Powell is a entering her junior year at Lander University pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. Brittney believes "children are the world's way of knowing life should go on." After graduation and once in the classroom, Brittney says "as part of my curriculum, I hope to explain to parents how important child nutrition is in developing productive learning and healthy minds. Her mother, Cynthia Powell is employed with school food service in Laurens School District 55.
§ Carmen Smith Sisk is the granddaughter of Sara Burgess, manager at Laurens Middle School in Laurens District 55. Carmen is beginning her senior year at Lander University completing studies to earn a Bachelors degree in Special Education wiht plans to pursue her Masters in either Early Childhood Education or English. She plans to become certified in the areas of Mental/Severe Disabilities, as well as the areas of Learning/Emotional Disabilities. Carmen is happy to share that she recently got engaged and is planning her wedding.
